Here's a variant of the off the peg underwater technique, used as a starting point with several textures added to create a bespoke portrait. Total execution time was about 2 hours.

Bespoke Portrait : Box Filling
Here's an example of a bespoke portrait based on the box-filling technique. I've added several extra layers of images, of clockwork gears and rusty textures,to give a steampunk-y look. Total time to do this image was roughly 3 hours.

Box Filling Deluxe
Overlaid composited box-filling images
Here I've taken five random images created by the box-filling algorithm (all based on the same underlying picture), and layered them on top of each other. This retains the blockiness of the boxes, but lets them fade into one another to give a more subtle effect.
BoxFilling
Basic "Box-filling" package of five random images
The box-filling algorithm randomly overwrites the space in an image with squares, whose color is based on the underlying picture. The five images are different random runs from the same starting point.
Buy a standard off-the-peg portrait package to get 5 different random versions of this effect on a photo of your choice.
See also this post and this one for some more sophisticated effects built on top of the box-filling algorithm.

Underwater
Underwater
Basic "Underwater" package of five grayscale images
In this style, I gradually erode the image into a series of "blobs", while keeping something of the original likeness.
This buys you five grayscale images in increasing stages of "erosion".

Crayon Graphic
"Crayon Graphic" image with color highlights.
This particular style uses a simplified outline of the subject and applies a crayon-like texture to it, to achieve a sketchy, graphic sort of look.
You can specify a color scheme of your choice, and/or ask for certain areas (e.g. eyes, mouth) to be highlighted. I can also add in some rough background color blocks, as in the image of the cat above.

What kind of picture do I need from you?
So, you'd like me to digitally remaster a picture for you. To do that, I need a picture from you, of the subject (usually yourself), to work from. What kind of picture do you need to send me?
Well, the short answer is that I can work with just about anything. But there are a number of considerations to bear in mind.
